Smilly Suri, known for her breakout role in the 2005 film Kalyug, recently discussed her prolonged absence from the film industry. In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Smilly disclosed that her cousin, Pooja Bhatt, played a significant role in influencing Mahesh Bhatt to avoid casting her in subsequent movies. Smilly revealed that Pooja's influence led to her being dropped from the 2006 film "Holiday," which Pooja directed. Despite this professional setback, Smilly expressed gratitude as this change of plans ultimately resulted in her role in "Kalyug," a successful venture that marked her presence in the industry. Smilly recounted the emotional turmoil she experienced due to Pooja's actions. She faced a period of intense shame and depression, exacerbated by negative coverage in the newspaper Mid-Day, often written by Pooja. The emotional distress was so severe that upon returning from the sets of "Holiday," Smilly locked herself in her room. During this challenging time, Mahesh Bhatt assured her that she would be cast in "Kalyug." Reflecting on this period, Smilly mentioned that after "Kalyug," Mahesh Bhatt couldn't offer her more films because he felt obliged to heed his daughter's preferences. Smilly harbours no ill will towards Mahesh Bhatt, understanding the familial dynamics at play. Discussing the situation further, Smilly acknowledged Pooja's decision to drop her from "Holiday," despite having significantly contributed to the project, including working with choreographer Sandeep Soparkar. Smilly participated in extensive rehearsals and dedicated six months to the film. While she respects Pooja's reasons for her decision, the experience was traumatic enough that Smilly prefers not to delve into the details.




The actress is part of a prominent film family, she is the sister of Aashiqui 2 director Mohit Suri and the cousin of Alia Bhatt, Emraan Hashmi, and Rahul Bhatt. As she prepares for her comeback, Smilly's new project, House of Lies, will see her starring alongside Sanjay Kapoor in the lead role.
